Devil Facial Tumour Disease (DFTD)
is a facial cancer that is killing
Tasmanian Devils in the wild
at an alarming rate.
First seen as a problem in 2001,
it has already killed 60% of the State's devils.
In some areas like the East Coast,
it has been almost a total destruction.

Tasmania, unfortunately, has a large amount of road kill.
Most of Tasmania’s animals are nocturnal
and when they are frightened adopt a
‘Freeze’ as their coping mechanism.

Frozen with fear ! ...they sadly don’t jump out of the way of vehicles

This results in large numbers of orphaned
and injured animals that need our care.

Our aim is to return
fit, healthy and
rehabilitated animals
back to the wild.

Natureworld accepts
animals, birds
and reptiles
at any time

WE RECEIVE NO GOVERNMENT HELP
FOR THIS EXPENSIVE AND TIME CONSUMING OPERATION

It is the countless unpaid hours given by our staff,
and the big-hearted donations of our visitors
that enable this work to continue.

Natureworld returned over sixty
animals back to the wild last year
and retained six that were
unsuitable to go back.

Look for Kookoo, Pipsqueak, Wattly, Crusty Pie
and Fangy One and Two.

Can you quess who they are ?

There are possibly no more than
20,000 Tasmanian Devils left from
a population of 150,000 in 2000.
The ‘tumour disease’ is believed to be a
‘transmissible cancer’ which is spread when
a diseased devil bites another devil.
Two thirds of the Tasmanian Devil wild
population is affected and DFTD marches
on towards the West Coast

Until September 2006 no devil in a wildlife park had been infected.
Tragically, three devils were found with DFTD at Trowunna wildlife park at
Mole Creek. It was from this park that four devils were sent to
Denmark earlier in 2006.
Other Tasmanian parks are trying to keep their devils in strict
‘bio-security’ as an ‘insurance population’ and to breed them.

Natureworld bred three tasmanian devils in 2006.
 Our purpose built
Devilworld is an interpretation and interaction centre
that provides the full story on the Tasmanian Devil
.
